I'm a tenant in a shared flat and we have discovered we have bed bugs. The landlord says we are responsible for fixing this problem. Is this true?
I'm a tenant in a shared flat with some friends. Recently we discovered bed bugs in two of our bedrooms but the landlord told us that the problem is ours because some of us brought the bugs in and we are responsible for fixing the problem - change the mattresses, call (and pay!) pest control etc. Is this true that we have to pay for everything?
Bed bugs do not fall within a landlord's obligations as set out in S 11 of the Landlord & Tenant Act, so the question will turn on the responsibilities set out in the tenancy agreement, unless you can prove that the bugs are the result of any failings on the part of the landlord.
