Should a landlord by law provide a fire extinguisher/blanket and should a smoke detector be mains powered rather than battery powered?
Should a landlord by law provide a fire extinguisher/blanket? Also the smoke detector in the property was battery operated. Does this have to be run via the mains or is battery power sufficient?
Whilst good practice to provide a fire extinguisher, it is not a legal requirement. However, where they have been provided, they should be in good working order and meet the required British Standard. In the case of fire alarms, building regulations require all properties built after June 1992 to have mains powered inter-connected smoke-alarm systems installed. Landlords of older properties should at least consider providing at least a battery-operated smoke-detector.
